ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Kanata Ballet School (now KBS Dance Ltd.) has a very proud history under the direction of partners Julia Lamperd and Marcia Caple. From its very beginning in 1969, this School has been dedicated to providing a thoroughly professional, non-competitive approach to the learning of dance in all its many forms. Each student is valued equally, regardless of ability. Now, as KBS Dance, Kanata's original dance school continues, led by its new Owner/Director, Suzanne Caple-Dodunski

At first, classes were held in gymnasiums throughout Beaverbrook. Next, we moved into the Beaverbrook Community Centre (at the back of the present Calian Center), using both upstairs and downstairs rooms. In 1979, Kanata Ballet School became a limited company, and we became the first tenants of the John Mlacak Centre. We were very much involved in the design of this facility, insisting on the sprung floors in Halls A and B.

Although originally we were mainly a Ballet school teaching the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), in the late ‘70s we were introduced to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), and began to offer ISTD National Dance classes and examinations. This program taught the folk dances of Europe, and students also studied the costumes and customs of each country.

Beginning in 1980, ISTD Modern Dance was added to the program, with Tap and Jazz shortly thereafter, and eventually Hip Hop.

We are always happy to welcome KBS graduates who return to visit us at the Mlacak Centre, or to attend our Shows. It is extremely rewarding when our former students enroll their own children in our classes. We have special pride in those who have gone on to careers in dance, such as Kevin Bowles and Jonathan Renna, both 2nd Soloists with the National Ballet of Canada, and Lynn (Elliott) Ahmad, newly-appointed RAD Children’s Examiner.

KBS is a proud supporter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. As a School, we participate annually in the CIBC “Run for the Cure”, and undertake such fund-raising projects as the Valentine’s Day Bake Sale.

Our teachers at KBS are world-class and hold international accreditations from institutions such as the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).

It is our sincere hope that our passion for dance will continue to inspire the children of Kanata for years to come.
